Spartak 78 U11s try out Paralympic sport
with help from Sainsbury's.

The players of the Spartak 78 U11 team held their Christmas party in Widdington Village Hall on Saturday 7th January and tried out 2 paralympic sports "Blind Football" and "Sitting Volleyball". Manager Claire Rees-Jones signed up to the Sainsbury's 1 million kids challenge and received a pack containing the necessary equipment and instructions to enable Claire to setup the games. After a warm-up session the boys played a series of paralympic games over 60 minutes and before getting stuck into the party food they were challenged by their parents to play "Goalball" and the boys won 3 games to 1. After the party a collection was made from the boys parents and this allowed Claire to pass over a cheque for £88.03 to local charity Support 4 Sight, supporting visually impaired people. In remembrance of Josh Bysouth

At Spartak we are all totally devastated by the tragic loss of Josh Bysouth and his Grandfather, Michael Kidd, and it is difficult to put into words the pain we all feel. Josh, who played for the current Spartak U14 youth football team, was such a lovely child, always smiling, always good natured and polite and totally comfortable in speaking with adults and he also was a role model for the younger players of the club to look up to. Though only 13 years old Josh was a tall boy at around 6 feet, and while an authoritative figure on the pitch he was kind and gentle off it. He had been at Spartak since he was 5 years old and at the start of this season been given the captaincy role. Indeed, only on Saturday he had gone into a local sports shop to get a captains armband to wear, and the next morning he had captained his side and received the man of the match award from his coach, Adam O’Sullivan. He was proud and loyal to his club and we will all miss Josh so much.

We thank everybody for all their messages of kindness and feel proud of the footballing community, which has come together to remember Josh and to grieve with us all. Our thoughts are with Josh’s family and close friends, particularly his parents who have lost a son and a father, and Josh’s grandmother who has lost a husband and a grandchild.

Spartak 78 YSC are looking to recruit some new players for their U10 team for the 2011/12 season starting in September 2011. Spartak 78 Mens Team Gain Promotion

We have received notification earlier this week that the Spartak Mens team have been promoted to Division One of Cambridge & District Friendly League after their first season. Furthermore three players have been asked to represent the CDFL in the reps team to play inter league matches next season.

Spartak 78 Mini League Tournament & Football Fun Day Report

On Saturday June 11th Spartak 78 YSC hosted their 8th Annual Mini League Tournament and Football Fun Day at the Herberts Farm playing fields in Saffron Walden. Thankfully the overnight rain eventually cleared prior to the start of the event and much of the football was played in bright sunshine. There were a total of 36 teams from ages U6 to U10 playing mini football, with many local teams attending, Plantation Youth and Saffron Walden Town and also teams from further afield such as Huntingdon and Ely and also several teams from Suffolk.
 
The standard of football was particularly high across all age groups and the enthusiastic supporters were royally entertained as a total of 90 matches were played. The competition in the U10s group was particularly close and all 7 teams could have qualified for the knockout stage had the final matches turned out differently. The U10s semi-finals saw Spartak 78 Reds overcome Plantation Panthers 2-1 with 2 late goals and Sutton Rangers defeat Plantation Pumas after extra time. In the final Spartak eventually ran out winners 3-0 against Sutton to maintain their fine recent run of form (photo). In the U9s semi-finals Cambridge Celts overcame Saffron Walden 2-1 and Plantation Pumas won via a penalty shoot-out with Haverhill Rovers. A closely fought final eventually saw the Pumas win 2-1 and thus all this year’s trophies went to Herberts Farm based teams(photo). In the younger age groups the matches were equally as competitive and the cheers echoed around Herberts Farm as and when goals were scored.
 
Spartak would like to give their sincerest thanks to all of the referees who very kindly gave up their time, to all of the volunteers (Spartak parents, friends and officials) who helped out with the event, to all of the sponsors who helped to support the event and finally to all of the teams who came along to participate and make it such a successful event. Also Spartak were particularly grateful to the Town Mayor and Mayoress of Saffron Walden for coming along and presenting the medals and trophies. We really do appreciate everyone’s support and wish all of the clubs good luck for next season and look forward to seeing you again soon.

Spartak 78 Colts Tournament Report

The weekend of 21st and 22nd May saw Spartak 78 YSC host their first 9 v 9 and 11-a-side football tournament, and were grateful for a fine bout of weather, if rather windy at times. In total, around 60 matches took place over the 2-day event as 29 teams from the age groups U11 to U16, and from no fewer than 19 clubs from as far a field as Ipswich and Ramsey, contested the event.
 
All of Spartak’s friends and local rival clubs from Saffron Walden were represented at the event, namely Plantation YFC, Saffron Walden Town FC and Walden Wanderers. Saffron Walden left the tournament very happy having picked up a trophy at the U11 age group with a 1-0 win over Balsham in their final (Photo), and another at U14 after beating Fulbourn Falcons 2-0 in the final. Plantation finished runners up at U13 with another local side, Sawston United, taking the title in a 5-1 thriller. Spartak’s U12s walked away winners at their age group after a 1-0 victory over Haverhill in the final (Photo).
 
The older age groups were settled by teams from further a field. Chesterton Villa triumphed over Hundon Hawks at U16 in a penalty shoot out after extra time failed to settle the tie which had ended in a goalless draw. At U15, Ramsey Colts were pleased to have made their long journey as they walked away 1-0 winners over Spartak’s U15 Reds in a closely contested final.
 
Spartak would like to give their sincerest thanks to Senior Referee Dudley Haylock who generously provided his refereeing services for free, putting in an outstanding 11 hour shift on the Saturday and a further 6 hours on the Sunday – many thanks Dudley. The club would also like to thank the local businesses who sponsored the tournament programme, and all those officials and parents within Spartak who gave up their time, be it refereeing, staffing the catering facilities, assembling and dismantling the facilities etc. Finally, Spartak would like to thank all of the teams who came from near and far to participate and make the event a success. Your support is much appreciated and we wish you all a great season for 2011/2012 and hope to see you all again at next year’s event.

Spartak 78 Goalkeeper Training with Neil O'Sullivan

Dear Members of the Club, For the ones who don't know me my name is Neil O'Sullivan (Ian and Sue's) son. I am contacting you all to express my intention to offer Goalkeeping training during the closed season. I am looking at running group sessions as well as 1 to 1 sessions. I already have two keepers on 1 to 1 so spaces are already going. Spartak keepers will receive a discounted rate. I am a fully qualified coach up to FA level 2. I also have completed my goalkeeping level 1. For the last year I have been playing out in the States so I have experience too. I also have level 1,2,3 in sports leader and level 1 in other sports.
 
The main question everyone will be asking how much!! Well for an hour group session:

I am looking at running these on Monday evenings and the start date will be confirmed shortly !!

Spartak 78 U10 Make Cambs KO Cup Final

It was confirmed last weekend that Spartak 78 will play Cherry Hinton Lions in the FA Cambs U10 KO Cup Final on Saturday 7th May at 10am. The final will be played at Cambridge City football club - see final details | see draw. We are hoping as many Spartak supporters as possible will come along to help to support the U10s, further details will be supplied nearer to the date.

Congratulations Brad Manning 100 goals for Spartak 78

He may only be 9 years old but Brad Manning has just notched his 100th goal for Spartak 78 following his hat-trick against Saffron Walden Town at Catons Lane on Saturday 12th Feb. Brad joined Spartak 4 years ago and during that period he has played 58 league games, 3 KO Cup matches and now scored a total of 102 league and cup goals, including 30 goals so far this season (that's 5 hat-tricks in total for 2010/11) with the prospect of more to come. Playing up front or on the wing, Brad scores regularly from long range shooting, with headers and also his quick thinking and deft footwork makes him particularly lethal anywhere inside the penalty area.

Congratulations to several members of the Spartak 78 U10 squad who have reached 50 league caps this season. Spartak 78 Turning back clock

Spartak 78 are stepping back in time by fielding its first adult team for three decades. When Spartak first started in 1978, a men's side flew the banner for the club, based in Harlow before movings into youth football, where they have had regular success and develop many a fine footballer.

Now a number of ex-Spartak youth players have entered a team in the Cambs Sunday League ahead of the season kick-off on September 5th. The team is looking for new players so if you fancy a challenge, give Ian a ring on 01799 501870.

Spartak 78 U15 Players Wanted For Next Season
 
The current Spartak U14B team, i.e U15B team for next season, 2010/2011, is looking to recruit another 2 or 3 players to strengthen the squad. The team will be playing in the Cambridgeshire Colts U15 'B' league next season (2010/2011). If you are an aspiring footballer currently in year 9 at school (year 10 from September), or may be year 8 and a strong player capable of playing up a year, then we would like to hear from you - please contact the U15B team manager, Colin Chappell, on 01799 525411 or e-mail colin.chappell@talk21.com. Carver Barracks Open Day and Car Boot Sale

A family fun day brimming with activity and military splendour is planned for visitors to the Carver Barracks Charity Fun Day. The Royal Engineers at Wimbish demonstrate how the experts dispose of potentially deadly bombs. Other attractions include divers, bomb disposal display, military vehicle rides, raffle (to drive tank over car.) Inter- squadron bridge competition. Entry fee in aid of Injured Soldiers Fund and Help for Heroes.
 
Spartak 78 are supporting this event and are running an information stall and 'beat the goalie' competition. Please come along and show your support for the 33 & 101 Engineer Regiment.

Congratulations to all the Mini League teams who played today in the 7th Annual Spartak Mini League Tournament at Herberts Farm, Saffron Walden and thank-you to all the visiting teams and their supporters! Winners of the U10 tournament were Teversham Colts who beat Holbeach United in the U10 final and winners of the U9 tournament were Spartak 78 who beat Plantation Pumas in the U9 final. Thank-you also to all the volunteers who helped to make this event happen!

Spartak 78 2010 Presentation Day
 
The presentation day on Sat 26th June at Sewards End Village Hall will kick off earlier than usual this year (doors open 1.00 pm for a 1.30 pm start) as we wish to be completed by 7.00 pm. This is because England may have a last 16 game (if they win their group) with a 7.30 pm KO, and the club plans to screen the game at the hall after completion of the presentations. It is hoped that many families will stay behind and cheer on England along with the rest of the club. The final document listing timings for individual age groups will be circulated during week commencing 14th June, but I can say broadly that the mini league presentations will be first, and will be between 1.30 pm and 3.00 pm, with the Colts presentations following afterwards. Raffle draw will be held at 5pm and there will also be a "slient auction" winners to be announced around 7pm.

Spartak 78 U18 New Kit Sponsors
 
Spartak under 18s - Having completed a successful first season in the Royston and Crow league the Spartak under 18's took on the managers and coaches of Spartak to prove that youth and energy was more important than experience. However they were wrong and didn't reckon on the Spartak managers being a mixture of all ages and had both energy and experience. The game started well and before half time the youngsters opened the score. Chances beckoned for the managers and before long they were 2 - 1 up. The second half was dominated by the managers and the final score finished 4 - 1. The match was the perfect opportunity for the team to show off their new kit, which has been very kindly sponsored by NISA Supermarket. Pictured (below) is Neil O'Sullivan receiving the cheque from John Visani of Nisa supermarket in Cromwell Road, Saffron Walden. Neil has now played his last game for Spartak as will be playing in Kansas USA next season. Spartak under 18's are entering into a senior league next season and will be looking for extra ex Spartak players.

Spartak 78 U9 participated in the Great Yarmouth Sci Tours May Bank Holiday football festival played over 2 days at the Mill Lane Centre, Great Yarmouth staying nearby at the Seahaven Holiday Park. Spartak played teams from Norfolk, Suffolk, Beds and Herts and were eventually the runners-up behind AFC Dunstable U9 after playing 10 matches (W6, D2, L2). Goal-scorers were Brad 7, Lukas 6, Sammy 2 and 1 apiece for Hudson, Kaine, Daniel and Ethan. The highlight of the matches was Ben's fantastic save in the final game, when Spartak were leading 1-0 and eventually went on to win 2-0. At the presentation ceremony on Sunday evening the boys received their runners-up trophies from former Wimbledon manager, Dave Bassett. Everyone had a super time and thanks to Claire RJ for organising the tour and to all the parents, friends and family members who came along and gave their support to the team!

Recent fund raising events, Mothers Day Market and Jumble Sale, managed to raise £463 for club funds, which will be used to support the activities of the Spartak teams. Thank-you to all those involved in organising and supporting these events.

Tesco Schools and Club Vouchers
 
Spartak 78 YSC are collecting Tesco Club Vouchers and will be collecting them to purchase equipment for the club. Please pass on any vouchers that you collect to club officials and team coaches and also we can claim vouchers for recycling old mobile phones (providing they are still working) and empty ink cartridges too.
