Neil O'Sullivan |
Update from Kansas on Neil's progress |
Keeping's a labour of glove for Neil A talented young goalkeeper from Saffron Walden, who was awarded a football scholarship at an American college last year, has continued to impress. Neil O’Sullivan, see photo below, has been ranked as the seventh best goalkeeper in the US college league. The 19 year-old, who previously played for Spartak 78, began his scholarship at Cloud County Community College in Concordia, Kansas in August 2010. After playing just a handful of games in his first year, O’Sullivan has stamped his authority on the number one jersey with a series of impressive performances. He has conceded just 6 goals in the first team’s 15 games this season and kept clean sheets in the last 7 - helping to keep the team on course to make the notional playoffs in November. The rankings are based on the number of goals conceded and the minutes on the pitch.
O’Sullivan is studying towards a qualification in athletic training and is hoping to be offered a scholarship at an American university before graduating from Cloud next summer. Although his ultimate aim is to play for a Major League Soccer team, he also harbours an ambition to coach. He has gained FA level 1 and 2 coaching badges and has been training youngsters in the US and in the UK during the summer holidays. He will be returning to Saffron Walden over the Christmas period, where he hopes to train mote youngsters at his goalkeeping school, based at Herberts Farm.
